How PTFE Helps the Mining Industry

PTFE and the Mining Industry | TriTec Seal

The mining industry is complex. It requires precision in all areas, and reliable equipment that can perform in extreme conditions without fail. Think of a cutter head tunneling into the earth, or a mining truck carrying a 400 ton payload. It takes extensive training and expertise to operate this machinery, and the ability to trust in its performance is critical. PTFE rotary lip seals are extremely effective in keeping mining equipment up and running with maximum efficiency.

PTFE (formally known as Polytetrafluoroethylene, frequently referred to as Teflon) is the right choice for rotary seals for a number of reasons. Because of its slippery nature, PTFE repels both wet and dry debris, abrasive and fine powders, allows very high RPMs and very low friction, and can withstand high temperatures and intense pressure. All of this means PTFE seals last longer than standard elastomeric seals.

Equipment failures in the mining industry can be devastating. The protection of miners is at great risk, as well as, in some cases, the safety of surrounding citizens and ecosystems. Of course, there is also the loss of time and money to consider. TRITEC was called on a number of years ago to help solve an industry-wide problem of equipment overheating and failure. Our engineering team developed a custom sealing solution including silicone carbide coated wear sleeves which increased RPMs and reduced electrical consumption.  Additionally, the seal and sleeve systems were certified XP. We were so proud to have a role in improving safety in the mining industry.

TRITEC’s PTFE rotary lip seals are made of customized blends of PTFE using several combinations of fillers. Our team of seasoned engineers evaluates each situation and chooses the best PTFE and filler blend, based on the final application for the seal. Get in touch, and let’s see how we can work together.
